The Next Mission - Into London!
In July of 2018 a team of adventurers will be peddling a giant plastic dragon shaped pedalo named #Dragalo from the source of the River Thames to the tidal barrage in the centre of London to raise money for Water Aid. The voyage will take around 3 weeks to undertake the 184 miles from the source of the River in the Cotswolds to the Barrage. We will first have to haul the pedalo 10 miles from a farmers field where the source is located to Crickdale to where the water becomes deep enough to be navigable. There will be 45 lock gates to pass through, approximately 30 miles of tidal river beyond Teddington lock and various river traffic. Dragalo will take us though the university city of Oxford, past Runnymede park where the Magna Carta was signed, close to Hampton Court Palace, kew Gardens and the Houses of Parliament. Following the river Thames is a tour of the history of the country like no other.
Primarily we aim to complete what is in essence a physical challenge and arrive at the Thames barrage bridge having started at the rivers source.
Capitalising on last years coast to coast adventure in Scotland, we feel that we can raise a higher profile and aim to raise a higher sum for charity. We aim to raise more than £10,000 for Water Aid.
Its going to be a long journey and on this adventure we will be getting support from friends and others to take part for various stages. We hope to inspire people to take part in an unusual, fun adventure they will remember.
The river Thames passes through many towns and villages on the way and we will meet many members of the public. We hope to bring a smile to as many people as possible along the way. If you see us then come and say hello!
“Wouldn't it be great to take Dragalo under Tower bridge?.”
This is the story of #Draglo, the green plastic dragon pedalo! Born in Portugal, woking on Atlantic beach resorts before emigrating to England to find work at Warwick castle at the River Avon boat club allowing tourists to get close to the castle. #Dragalo has put the life of working in the tourist industry behind and has become an adventure pedalo.
A conversation in a local ale house between Matt and Sam in 2016 considered the possibility of finding a pedalo to undertake a long voyage with on a Uk watercourse. In 2017 Matt and Sam found #Dragalo and the relationship has gone from strength to strength. #Dragalo has been on a weekend adventure on the River Severn and has since crossed Scotland, coast to coast on the Caledonian canal through Loch Ness! Attitude and stability in water are no longer questioned. What does the future hold?
